About

BPSC2024 will be an in-person conference hosted by Space Park Leicester and the National Space Centre. Share your research, attend a space instrumentation workshop and take part in the online community consultation session on Friday 21st 11-1 pm .

The conference will be co-located between Space Park Leicester and the adjacent National Space Centre. Special accommodation rates are now available (until 31st May) for a limited number of rooms at the University-operated College Court hotel. Accommodation is also available at the nearby Novotel Leicester.

Only the community consultation event on the 21st will have a live, hybrid capability. This will also be opened via Teams Live to the wider community.

We will provide shuttle bus transportation between College Court and the conference venue.

The registration fee includes coach travel to and from the official accommodation provider, College Court.

Tuesday 18th June:
Bus leaves College Court at 4.15 pm to get (via Novotel) to Icebreaker at SPL for 5 pm.

Space Park to Novotel and College Court, leaves SPL at 7 pm.

Wednesday 19th June:
College Court, then Novotel, to National Space Centre. Leaves CC at 8.15 am
Space Park to Novotel and ECR meal at Spice Bazaar and Craddock Arms (Craddock Arms is beside College Court, Spice Bazaar is 10-15 mins walk from CC). Leave SPL 7 pm.

Thursday 20th June
College Court, then Novotel to National Space Centre. Leaves 8.15 am
National Space Centre Dinner – Novotel then College Court – First bus (capacity 83) at 10 pm and second bus between 11 and 12 pm.

Friday 21st June
College Court, Novotel to National Space Centre. Leaves College Court 8.15 am

Lunches

Free packed lunches will be provided for workshop attendees (capped at 50), and on the 19th, 20th, and 21st for BPSC attendees.

Code of Conduct. BPSC2024 will follow the Code of Conduct for NAM2022 which you can see here. For any violations of this code at the conference please contact the BPSC organisers and at bpsc2024@space-park.co.uk.

Access to National Space Centre Galleries

Those attending the event during both the day and the evening of the 20th June will have access to the National Space Centre galleries included. Delegates may explore at their own leisure.

During the day, access is between visitor attraction opening hours of 10am-4pm (entire centre). During the evening event, guests will have access up the Rocket Tower during the arrival drinks reception and the main galleries after dinner. There will also be a Planetarium show (Capcom Go!)

A bus (capacity 83) will leave the NSC to return to College Court via Novotel at 10 pm and a second one will leave the NSC between 11 and 12 pm.

  • Talks (other than keynotes) within the science sessions will be 12 minutes + 3 minutes for Q&A. Talks can be uploaded prior to the session or sent by the day before your talk using wetransfer.com to bpsc2024@space-park.co.uk
  • Deadline for booking accommodation with College Court at the reduced rate 31st May.
  • Registration deadline: Please register at the same time as abstract submission
  • Conference Icebreaker 5 pm 18th June, ECR social event 19th June, NSC Dinner Thursday 20th June. The NSC dinner is now closed to new people as we have reached the capped number of 135. Please fill in and return the dinner choices form by 10th June, that will be sent to those who have registered for this event.

Travel

Space Park Leicester and the National Space Centre are 1.8 miles (2.9 km) north of Leicester City Centre, and 3.3 miles (5.3 km) north of the main University of Leicester campus.

Train

There is one train station in Leicester, just on the outskirts of the city centre. Trains from all over the country arrive here on a regular basis. Having arrived at this station, follow the bus instructions below depending on your destination.

Car

For those travelling by car, please follow directions to the National Space Centre, Exploration Drive, Space City, Leicester, LE4 5NS. Parking permit available on request from BPSC organisers. Alternatively costs £3 per day (pay and display). There is no parking available at Space Park (apart from disabled).

Disabled parking is available at Space Park Leicester, please email your car registration number to reception@space-park.co.uk with the dates of your visit to allow the team to add your vehicle to the ANPR barrier system. Follow directions to: Space Park Leicester, 92 Corporation Drive, Leicester, LE4 5SP.

Bus

All Leicester buses now accept card payment, cash is still accepted but attendees are advised to give exact change where possible. Single and Return tickets are purchased from the driver when boarding the bus. Single fares in Leicester are capped at a maximum of £2.

Arriva operates most of the buses in Leicester, if you are going to get a saver ticket, this is the best company to get it from. All saver tickets allow unlimited travel on Arriva buses for the allotted time. The ticket expires at midnight on the final day. Note unless otherwise stated, the return route will use the same bus numbers just in the opposite direction as the route there.

  • A day ticket is £5.30
  • The duo ticket costs £10.00 and allows 2 people to travel
  • A week ticket is £20.00

The Leicester Hop! bus is free. The only other saver ticket that might be worth getting is from First Bus Leicester, depending on which services you plan to use.

  • A day ticket is £5.30

To College Court

  • From the Train Station: Take the 44 or 44a bus (every 15 mins) from the bus stop on the same side of the road as the train station. Get off the bus at ‘Northcote Road’ bus stop which is at the end of Queen’s Road. You will now be in front of College Court.
  • From the city centre: Take the same 44 or 44a bus as above, but from Haymarket Bus Station instead of the Train Station

To Novotel

  • From the train station: take the Hop! bus (every 10 mins) from the bus stop on the opposite side of the road to the train station. Get off the bus at either:
    • Causeway Lane (stop AD), walk to Vaughan Way, turn left and cross the road. Walk down Vaughan Way for 5 mins to reach the Novotel.
    • St. Nicholas Circle (stop FC), cross the road and walk North up Vaughan Way for 5 mins to reach the Novotel.
  • From the city centre: 9 min walk to reach Novotel

To the Space Park

  • From the Train Station: take the 31, 31a, 44, 44a, 47, x3, x7 or the Hop! bus (from the stop on the opposite side of the road to the train station) to Haymarket Bus Station, then either:
  • Take the 54 bus (every 8 mins) to Chale Road and walk for 5 mins on Corporation Road until you reach the Space Centre.
  • Take the 303 P&R bus (every 15 mins) to Space Centre bus stop, then walk down Exploration Drive, turn right on Corporation road and walk until you get to the space centre (Total ~12 min walk time)
  • Walk 5 min to St. Margaret’s Bus Station and take the Skylink Derby bus (every 20 mins but does run 24 hrs a day) to Corporation road bus stop, then walk 5 mins down Corporation Road until you reach the space park.
  • From College Court: take the 44 or 44a bus (every 15 mins) to Haymarket bus station, then either:
    • Take the 54 bus (every 8 mins) to Chale Road and walk for 5 mins on Corporation Road until you reach the Space Centre.
    • Take the 303 P&R bus (every 15 mins) to Abbey Park Space Centre bus stop, then walk down Exploration Drive, turn right on Corporation road and walk until you get to the space centre (Total ~12 min walk time)
    • Walk 5 min to St. Margaret’s Bus Station and take the Skylink Derby bus (every 20 mins but does run 24 hrs a day) to Corporation road bus stop, then walk 5 mins down Corporation Road until you reach the space park.
  • From Novotel: walk 8 mins to St. Margaret’s Bus Station, then take the Skylink Derby (every 20 mins) to Corporation road bus stop, then walk 5 mins down Corporation Road until you reach the space park.
Air

From the London Airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton): Take the train to Leicester Train Station, then follow the relevant bus instructions from the Train Station above.

From the East Midlands Airport (EMA): To get to Leicester, either:

  1. Take the Skylink Derby in the direction of Leicester. It will arrive in St. Margaret’s Bus Station. If you are going to College Court, follow the College Court by bus from the city centre instructions above. If you are going to the Novotel, walk for 8 mins from the Bus station down Vaughan way to reach the Novotel.
  2. Take the Skylink Nottingham bus from the airport in the direction of Nottingham to Long Eaton Train Station. Take the train to Leicester then follow the bus instructions from the Train Station above.

BPSC Conference ECR grants and prizes

There will be prizes for best ECR/student oral and poster presentations and 2 runner up prizes. These will be awarded at the end of the conference.
